FROM COWSHED TO LOFT

FROM COWSHED TO LOFT

A change of use

When a farm in the Vaud region ceases operations, the vast rural spaces become a realm of spiders and draughts, whilst the living quarters retain their original purpose. Nevertheless, these spaces exist and have a rich history. This heritage can and must be showcased to restore a practical use to these premises in a context of a shortage of living space.

Features inherent to the house’s structure, such as the hand-hewn timber frame, have been incorporated into the walls so as to remain visible. Transforming this ground floor – a former cowshed – into a contemporary loft presented a challenge. Indeed, the floor slopes, the ceiling is very low and the room is often poorly lit. We chose to retain the feeding troughs and metal rings to create niches in the wall, ensuring the space’s past is not forgotten. The smooth walls blend with existing materials such as brick and wood. Every detail has been crafted in keeping with the spirit of the house, from the solid wood countertop in the bathroom opening onto the bedroom, to the sliding door of the bathroom made from century-old planks mounted on ironwork restored to its original state.
